Five Common Ways Car Accidents and Injuries Occur

Car accidents and injuries happen when you least expect them. Dangerous driving behaviors on the part of other drivers are the most common cause of these accidents, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Being aware of the different ways in which car accidents occur emphasizes the need for defensive driving skills, and can help alert you to situations you need to avoid.

Common Car Accident Types

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than six million car accidents occur each year in the United States. To determine factors that make car accidents more likely to happen, researchers review traffic crash reports looking for underlying causes. In the NHTSA’s National Crash Causation Survey, crash reports indicate that driver error and reckless driving behaviors, such as distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence, and the leading contributing factors, followed by vehicle malfunctions and road or weather conditions.

Poor choices drivers make while behind the wheel put them and other motorists at risk for certain types of car accidents. is a consumer advocacy website which offers vehicle safety information, ratings, and reviews. They claim that the following are the five most common types of collisions responsible for car accidents and injuries:

  1. Rear End Collisions: These are among the most common type of accident, and occur when one vehicle crashes into another from behind. Speeding, tailgating, and distracted driving are among the most common causes.
  2. Side Impact Collisions: This occurs when the side of one car is hit by either the front or back of another. These accidents can result in severe injuries for drivers or passengers sitting in the affected areas. They are often caused by running red lights, disregarding stop signs, and being distracted while behind the wheel.
  3. Sideswipe Collisions: This involves two vehicles, often headed in the same direction, who brush up against and collide with each other. The speed at which the drivers are going and the surrounding traffic conditions can make these accidents more severe. These are generally caused by aggressive driving behaviors, such as improper passing and failure to yield.
  4. Rollover Accidents: These generally involve SUVs, trucks, and taller vehicles, They can occur when carrying uneven loads, or when approaching curves, turns, or exit ramps at a high rate of speed.
  5. Head-On Collisions: These are the most potentially dangerous type of accident. They can occur on one way streets and intersections, as well as when drivers drift out of their own lane and into oncoming traffic. Driving under the influence and falling asleep behind the wheel are often to blame.
