Four Factors Responsible in Christmas Car Accident that Killed Nine-Year-Old Boy

Reckless and illegal driving behaviors increase the risks of car accidents, both for the at fault driver, their passengers, and other motorists on the road. In fatal car crashes and collisions, there are often multiple factors that are to blame for the accident itself, as well as for the severity of the injuries victims suffer. In the tragic case of a nine-year-old boy killed in a Fort Pierce car accident on Christmas day 2017, police have identified four separate actions on the part of the driver which increased the odds that a fatal collision would occur.

Driver Faces Multiple Charges in Fatal Car Accident

According to a January 2018 news report in the TCPalm, the state attorney’s office is considering pressing multiple charges against the driver responsible for a tragic car accident that happened on December 25, 2017, killing a nine-year-old boy. The boy, whose birthday happened to be on Christmas Eve, was heading home early the next morning with his family when the accident occurred.

Traffic investigators claim a 29-year-old man was behind the wheel. As he sped down Cortez Boulevard, going 70 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone, the car began skidding and went into the wrong lane. He then ran a stop sign, and collided into the side of an F250 truck parked across the intersection at Sunrise Boulevard. The nine-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and the boy’s mother, who was in the passenger seat, and his six-year-old sister, who sat beside him in the backseat, all suffered serious injuries. Police report that the car smelled of alcohol, and that none of the victims were wearing seatbelts at the time the accident occurred. The driver admitted to being guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs, which blood testing later confirmed.

Factors that Increase Fatal Collision Risks

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fatal car accidents kill close to 40,000 people on U.S. roads each year. In the Fort Pierce accident, there were four factors which increased the likelihood of a collision:

  • Driving under the influence: Driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs is a factor in roughly 40 percent of all fatal crashes;
  • Speeding: Speeding is a factor in roughly one third of all car accidents, and increases the severity of impact, resulting in fatal injuries;
  • Disregarding traffic signals: Running red lights or stop signs increases the likelihood of dangerous head on and side impact collisions;
  • Not wearing a seatbelt: Wearing a seatbelt behind the wheel and insisting that all passengers do the same cuts the risk of fatal car accident injuries in half.
