Head on Car Accident in Fort Pierce Leaves One Dead, Two Injured

There are numerous types of car accidents which can threaten the safety of you and your loved ones. Rear end accidents are among the most common, which often occur in heavy traffic or at stop signs and intersections. Side impact and side swipe collision are common also, and can happen when making turns or when one motorist attempts to pass another in traffic. Any of these have the potential to leave you with serious injuries. However, head on collisions are the most dangerous. They are among those most likely to result in life threatening injuries and deaths.

Head on Collision in Fort Pierce

A recent head on collision in Fort Pierce claimed the life of one person and left two others with serious injuries. According to WPTV, the accident occurred on Thursday, August 30, 2018, near 10 p.m. on Seaway Drive. Police reports indicate that a silver 2007 Dodge Ram truck, driven by a 27-year-old Fort Pierce resident, was headed west when the driver suddenly veered into the eastbound traffic lanes.

On the South Causeway Bridge, the truck collided with a green 1997 Ram truck driven by a 20-year-old St. Lucie County resident, who was pronounced dead on the scene. The passenger in his truck and the driver of the silver Ram, both of whom have not been identified, suffered serious injuries and were taken to local hospitals. The Fort Pierce Police continue to investigate the causes of the crash.

How Head on Collisions Happen

Head on collisions are one of the least common types of crashes. Unfortunately, according to, a service of the Brain Injury Institute, they tend to be among the most severe. The speed at which the vehicles involved are traveling, the amount of warning each has before the crash, and the force of impact involved are all contributing factors.

As the result of a head one collision, drivers and passengers can end up being thrown from the vehicle, slammed against windshields and dashboards, or caught between seats and crushed metal. Injuries may include:

  • Multiple broken bones;
  • Severe cuts and lacerations;
  • Abdominal injuries, resulting in damage to body organs;
  • Back and neck injuries, resulting in damage to the vertebrae or spinal cord;
  • Head trauma, resulting in severe concussions and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Head on collisions are common on highway exit and entrance ramps or on one way streets where drivers are traveling in the wrong direction. They can also occur due to being under the influence of alcohol and drugs or due to falling asleep behind the wheel, both of which can cause drivers to drift from their lanes.
