Over Summer, Play It Safe by Obeying Florida Traffic Laws

Summer means an increase in traffic throughout Florida, with both tourists and local residents vying for space on roads and interstates. Between the excitement of being off work or on vacation and being distracted by the heat or the activities you have planned, the likelihood for reckless and driving behaviors increases. Unfortunately, this also makes car accidents more likely to occur. Protect yourself and play it safe this summer by paying close attention to Florida traffic rules and regulations.

Protect Yourself Against Car Accidents and Injuries

According to Florida’s Integrated Report Exchange System (FIRES), over 5,000 car accidents occurred in St. Lucie County over the course of 2017. These accidents left more than 3,000 people with injuries, while proving fatal for close to 40 others. In the majority of these cases, reckless and illegal driving behaviors are to blame.

Reckless behaviors such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and using cell phones, texting, or taking pictures behind the wheel all increase your car accident risks. While many of us are aware of the dangers these types of activities present to our passengers and others on the road, it is important to realize that simply failing to follow traffic rules and regulations can also significantly increase your risks.

In high traffic conditions and when you are in a rush to get where you need to go, it can be easy to overlook the rules of the road. Under the Florida State Statutes, all of the following behaviors are illegal. In addition to resulting in fines and potential points on your driver’s license, they can also put you and other drivers in harm’s way:

  • Speeding: One of the most common causes of severe and potentially fatal car accidents, even going five or ten miles over the speed limit can increase your likelihood of a crash.
  • Disregarding traffic signals: Intersections are one of the most common places for car accidents to occur and running yellow lights and rolling through stop signs increases your risks.
  • Tailgating: A class type of aggressive driving behavior, it escalates tension and can increase the odds of being involved in a rear end collision.
  • Improper passing: Weaving in and out of lanes and cutting other drivers off makes it dangerous for everyone on the roads.
  • Failure to yield: Keeping your cool in traffic and patiently taking turns can help reduce the odds of potentially serious collisions.

Unfortunately, even if you are careful to obey traffic regulations, you risk being injured by the reckless actions of others. If you notice someone engaged in any of the above types of behavior, you can report them to Florida Highway Patrol by dialing *FHP (347) on your mobile phone-just make sure to pull over before making the call.
