Rollover Accident Leaves Two Injured in Fort Pierce

Rollover crashes are one of the most dangerous types of car accidents, with the potential to leave drivers of the vehicle, the passengers in it, and other motorists involved with serious and potentially life threatening personal injuries. While often associated with tall trucks and overweight vehicles, the fact is these types of crashes can happen to anyone on the road.

Rollover Accident on Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce

Two people were left with serious injuries recently as the result of a rollover accident on the Florida Turnpike. A Saturday, February 9, 2019 news report CBS 12 states that the crash occurred earlier that morning when a Loomis armored vehicle suddenly pitched and went off the road. Both the driver and a passenger in the truck suffered injuries as a result of the accident.

Police reported that one of the victims was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, while the other was reported in fair condition. Fortunately, no other motorists were involved in the crash and police are still investigating to determine any underlying causes involved. While the armored vehicle was not much larger than a pick-up truck or an SUV, the height of the truck and the weight it was carrying may have contributed to the accident.

Risk Factors for Rollover Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, rollovers are complex car accidents that often have numerous factors involved. They can happen to any size car or truck but the taller the vehicle and the more weight is unevenly distributed increases the likelihood of this type of crash. Other factors that the NHTSA states are common in rollover accidents include:

  • Speed: Going over the speed limit or even traveling too fast for conditions makes rollovers more likely to occur. More than 40 percent of fatal rollovers involve speeding and 75 percent occur at speeds greater than 55 miles per hour.
  • Driving Under the Influence: Alcohol is a factor in close to half of all rollover accidents. Being under the influence impairs your vision, reflexes, coordination, and judgment, making you more likely to lose control of your vehicle.
  • Location: While highways and interstates, such as in the case above, are frequently the site of rollover accidents, they are just as likely to happen on rural roads where there may not be a median or guardrails protecting the driver.
  • Dangerous Driving Behaviors: In addition to speeding and driving under the influence, dangerous driving behaviors such as distracted driving, driving too close to other vehicles, and improper passing all increase your rollover accident risks.
