Safety First: Reducing Florida Motorcycle Accidents and Injuries

With spring right around the corner, motorcycle season is about to take off through the South Florida area. Between local enthusiasts and visitors to bike rallies or other events, traffic will get heavier in the weeks and months ahead. If you are a motorcyclist, it is important to make safety a top priority. Florida leads the nation in the number of motorcycle accidents, injuries, and fatalities which occur each year. The following is designed to help you protect yourself.

Florida Motorcycle Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Florida tops the list when it comes to the total number of motorcycle accident fatalities. Close to 600 people are killed each year in these accidents, while thousands of other suffer serious and potentially disabling injuries. This is more than in larger states, such as Texas or California, and greater than the figures for the neighboring states of Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana combined.

The NHTSA advises that in terms of causes, roughly half of all motorcycle fatalities in our state occur as the result of drunk driving. Unfortunately, collisions with motor vehicles are also common and can be particularly deadly, especially for the motorcyclist involved. Behaviors on the part of at fault drivers which make these types of motorcycle accidents more likely include:

  • Speeding and going too fast for conditions;
  • Failure to obey traffic stop signs and signals;
  • Improper passing and swerving out of lanes;
  • Distracted driving, such as talking on cellphones and texting;
  • Tailgating and other types of aggressive driving behaviors, such as failure to yield.

While motorcyclists depend on law enforcement to enforce traffic regulations and apprehend dangerous drivers, it is important for riders to be aware of the risks and to take the necessary steps to protect themselves.

Motorcycle Safety Tips

In addition to drunk driving and reckless behaviors on the part of other drivers, road and weather conditions are also a common factor in motorcycle accidents. To reduce risks, it is important for motorcyclists to keep their bike well maintained and to wear the appropriate safety gear. The National Safety Council (NSC) urges all bikers to follow these safety tips:

  • Always wear a helmet when riding and require passengers to do the same.
  • Dress appropriately, wearing rugged pants and long sleeved shirts to prevent against road burns in the event of a spill.
  • Wear gloves, which give your hands a better grip on the wheel.
  • Make sure headlights work properly and use them day and night.
  • Follow all traffic rules and avoid weaving in and out of traffic.
  • Realize that riding with a passenger requires additional skill.
  • Take a motorcycle training course if you are new to riding or need to brush up on your knowledge.
